WHEN TO SEE AN OB/GYN:

An OB/GYN (obstetrician/gynecologist) is a physician who specializes in pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the overall health of the female reproductive system. In some cases, a woman’s regular gynecologist is a certified OB/GYN, but in others, a woman will need to seek out an OB/GYN, or an obstetrician, once she becomes pregnant. Whether a woman is looking for an OB/GYN for general gynecological care, or because she is pregnant, it is imperative that a patient feels comfortable with her choice in physician.

HOW TO FIND A GOOD OB/GYN:

Gynecological exams and pregnancies are both very personal experiences, and should only be monitored by a doctor with whom a patient feels truly comfortable. It is a good idea for a woman to ask friends, or other trusted doctors for references. A woman should also check with her insurance to make sure that they provide coverage for the OB/GYN of her choice. Once the list has been narrowed down, there are some important factors that a patient should consider to ensure that she will receive the best care possible:

Is the OB/GYN board certified?
Comfort level with a man vs. woman OB/GYN
Who else, such as a nurse practitioner, will be involved in patient care?
Has the OB/GYN had any problems with their medical practice in the past?
Does the OB/GYN encourage open discussion?

If a woman is pregnant, or looking to become pregnant in the near future, she should also consider the following:

Does the OB/GYN share the same philosophies on pregnancy and childbirth?
How many babies has the OB/GYN delivered?
If the OB/GYN is unavailable for delivery, who is the backup?

WHY OPEN DIALOGUE IS IMPORTANT:

It is so important that a woman feels comfortable discussing all health and pregnancy concerns with her OB/GYN. During her exams, a woman should bring up any concerns or symptoms, no matter how insignificant they may seem. An OB/GYN should be knowledgeable on all female health issues, and can provide valuable advice, and referrals if needed.
