WHY SEE A GYNECOLOGIST?
A gynecologist is a physician who specializes in women’s health and the health of the female reproductive system. Finding a good gynecologist is extremely important for all women, particularly those over 18 and those who are sexually active. It is imperative that all women see their gynecologist at least once a year for disease testing and contraception management.
HOW TO FIND A GOOD GYNECOLOGIST:
A gynecological exam is a very personal experience, and should only be performed by a doctor with whom a patient feels truly comfortable. It is a good idea for a woman to ask friends, or other trusted doctors for references. A woman should also check with her insurance to make sure that they provide coverage for the gynecologist(s) of her choice. Once the list has been narrowed down, there are some important factors that a patient should consider to ensure that she will receive the best care possible:
Is the gynecologist board certified?
Comfort level with a man vs. woman gynecologist
Who else, such as a nurse practitioner, will be involved in patient care?
Has the gynecologist had any problems with their medical practice in the past?
Does the gynecologist encourage open discussion?
WHY OPEN DIALOGUE IS IMPORTANT:
It is so important for a woman to feel comfortable discussing all health concerns with her gynecologist. Since an annual gynecological exam may be the only medical attention that a woman seeks on a regular basis, a good gynecologist can be a great source for general medical advice, even outside of the reproductive system. During her exam, a woman should bring up any symptoms, no matter how insignificant they may seem. A gynecologist should be knowledgeable on all female health issues, and can provide valuable advice, and referrals if needed.
